The party came across a fork in the road to Phandalin: a low path
by the river, or a rocky high path through the hills
- A pair of local traders ran by from the lower path, fleeing from
“Bearman & Manand the Bear”
- With his harengon hearing, Hurlin detected yelling from the high
path
The party chose to follow the high path
- They arrived in a clearing where they encountered a pair of dwarves
(Brom & Darric), who had been chased down from the mountains by
wolves
- One of the dwarves (Brom) was injured with a broken leg
- The injured dwarf also carried a conspicuously-valuable pickaxe
- They chose to help the dwarves, splinting the leg of the injured
dwarf’s leg
- Wolves attacked the party as they tried to leave the clearing
- One wolf was able to knock Darric unconscious
- A powerful spell from Sym immediately killed one of the wolves and
injured another
- An intimidating yell from Beastmaster was able to cause the wolves
to flee
- Hurlin was able to restore Darric to consciousness by giving him a
goodberry
The party continued their journey towards town, accompained by
the injured dwarves
- They ran into an attractive young woman who introduced herself as
Phandalin’s town healer, Adabra Gwynn
- Due to their fey heritage, Sym and Hurlin were able to recognize
Adabra as Fey Touched
- Upon questioning, Adabra explained that she was tending to the
forest
- Food had been scarce in the forest this year, because a white dragon
was causing chaos in the area
- She carried a basket of goodberries
- Adabra offered to escort the dwarves home to the Miner’s Exchange so
she could tend to their wounds
- The party gave their consent
The group entered the town of Phandalin, splitting from Adabra
and the dwarves
- They learned of several initial points of interest
- Stonehill Inn, run by Tolben Stonehill
- Barthen’s Provision’s, a general store run by Elmar Barthen
- Lionshield Coster, a weapon shop run by Linene Greywind
- Miner’s Exchange, a bustling business run by Halia Thorton (home to
Brom & Darric)
- Townmaster’s Hall, home to the eccentric mayor, Harbin Wester
- A Shrine of Luck, dedicated to the goddess Tymora, near the town
square
- The party chose to head to Stonehill Inn, where they chose to rent a
room
- The group met the inn’s priopretor, Tolben Stonehill
- Tolben agreed to rent the party a large room for 10gp per
fortnight
- They visited the inn’s dining hall
- The group ordered drinks and chatted with the Inn’s barkeep, Ravena
- Ravena told the group about a famous local hunter named Falcon, who
runs a luxurious lodge in the area
- She noted that Falcon is known to host travelers who bring him a
nice bottle of drink
- The group met Donny and Drove, two working miners who live in the
town, colleagues of Darric & Brom
- The group met the Barry the Bard, a performer at the inn
- The party visited the Townmaster’s Hall, and found two quests of
interests posted on the board outside
- Dwarven Excavation Quest: Some local dwarves have been exploring
ruins to the southwest, and need a warning that a dragon has been moving
into the immediate area
- Gnomengarde Quest: A clan of reclusive rock gnomes live in caves to
the southeast, and are known for magical weapons – which might prove
useful for fighting a dragon
- The party chose to pursue the Dwarven Excavation Quest, and knocked
on the door of the hall to inform the questgiver & mayor, Harbin
Wester
- Harbin Wester refused to open the door the party, and struck the
party as paranoid and eccentric
- He nonetheless agreed to let the party take the quest, and sent them
on their way after marking their map with a path to the ruins
- Before leaving town, the party went to check on Brom & Darric
- They were greeted by Halia Thorton, proprietor of the Miner’s
Exchange
- Halia praised the party as heroes, and gave them a pack containing
two daggers and a potion of healing
- Both dwarves were recovering well
- When pressed, Brom & Darric revealed that they had been
prospecting for star-metal in the mountains, on behalf of “the Duke”
- They believed “the Duke” intended to buy star-metal to make bolts
that could damage the dragon
- The party noticed old dwarfish runes on the pickaxe
- Brom admitted that his conspicuously-valuable pickaxe was a special
one able to mine star-metal
- The party asked if Brom & Darric knew the dwarves that the party
would be visiting on their quest
- Brom & Darric said they knew them well
- Darric asked the party to bring 10gp to his friend, Chipper, to
settle a debt
- The party agreed to take the money to Chipper
(Party reached level 2)
After resting for the night, the party set off towards the
dwarven excavation site
- After traveling for most of the day, they arrived in a rocky canyon
with steep sides
- The canyon led to a old gated passageway
- The party noticed an active campsite outside the gate
- Upon entering the camp, the party found the three dwarves they were
ostensibly sent to find: Chipper, Dazlyn, and Norbus
- The party gave Chipper the 10gp that Darric asked them to bring
- Chipper complained that Darric owed him 15gp, but didn’t press the
issue
- The dwarves showed the party some of the trinkets they’d found in
the ruins
- The dwarves offered the party two stones of sending in exchange for
clearing some monsters from the ruins
- The dwarves described the monsters as “garden-variety dungeon
monsters: goblins, skeletons, jellies”
- The party accepted the offer
The party passed through the gated entrance to the ruined
settlement
- They found themselves in an outdoor area surrounded with collapsed
buildings and rubble
- The party decided to search through the rubble
- They found a shortsword in fair condition
- They found some stone fragments containing old dwarvish writing,
with runic script similar to Brom’s pickaxe
- The party made a pencil rubbing of the stone fragments
- The party found the entrance to a cave temple, and went inside
- The group found nothing of note in the immediate vicinity of the
entrance
- The group sent Hurlin, wildshaped as a mouse, to scout the next room
- Hurlin was able to identify several jellies in the next room
